• Bungay:
Grant Pilcher has been a Partner at Larking Gowen since 1999 having qualified as a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Tax Advisor and Trust and Estates Practitioner.
Grant sits on the Norfolk Young Farmers’ steering committee, is a Nuffield Scholar, an advisor to the board of a local Machinery Ring a Council Member and Cattle Steward for the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association and has recently become a member of the British Institute of Agricultural Consultants. Grant speaks on agriculture at meetings throughout East Anglia and is a frequent contributor to the rural press.
• Colchester:
James joined the firm in 1996 and qualified in 2000. After spells at the firm’s Holt, Norwich and Ipswich offices he joined the partnership in 2005 and relocated to Essex to work at the newly acquired Colchester office. James is a member of the Association of Chartered Accountants.
James acts for a wide range of clients, both private and corporate and has particular expertise in the shipping industry. He enjoys working closely with owner managed businesses to provide proactive advice in relation to tax planning and business development issues.
He also works closely with the firms Corporate Finance and Business Recovery departments in order to provide a comprehensive service to the Colchester business community.
• Cromer:
Philip joined Larking Gowen in 1983 and having qualified as a Chartered Accountant moved to take up a position as partner with George Edwards & Co, a firm of accountants based in North Norfolk. This business retained a close working relationship with Larking Gowen and in 1994 the two firms merged and since then Philip has worked as a partner in Holt and Cromer offices.
Philip has considerable experience in dealing with a large variety of small and medium size businesses, concentrating on cost effective ways of improving business performance and planning to mitigate tax liabilities.
Philip is also closely involved in personal tax planning, including advising individuals on ways to reduce both capital gains and inheritance tax having regard to the individual's personal and family circumstances.
Chris is a partner at our Holt and Cromer offices. He has a wide range of clients, operating as sole traders, partnerships or limited companies. He also acts for a number of high wealth individuals and personal tax clients. Chris is a Fellow Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and also a Chartered Tax Adviser.
Chris is the Tourism and Hospitality specialist within the firm, due to his knowledge and understanding of this particular sector, and the particular issues that affect these businesses.
Chris enjoys efficient and effective tax planning for both businesses and individuals in order to minimise and mitigate tax liabilities and presents regularly on aspects of business development and growth. He is always happy to discuss any aspect of Personal and Business Goal setting and tax planning.
• Dereham:
Chris joined Larking Gowen in 1981 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1984. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. He became a partner in 1991 and is in charge of the firm’s office in Dereham, specialising in building long term relationships with a wide variety of owner managed and family businesses.
Chris runs the firms business breakfast programme and presents on a wide range of business development topics at meetings all across East Anglia. He has wide experience in this field having delivered a number of strategic planning sessions to clients across the firm.
Chris has also presented a number of seminars on capital tax planning and he is a regular contributor to BBC Radio Norfolk.
David Missen joined Larking Gowen in 1983 and is a partner in the firm’s Fakenham office, specialising in Agriculture, Professional Partnerships and rural issues. For the last ten years he has been responsible for the production of the firm’s annual survey of farming profits in East Anglia. He is a founder member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants’ Farming and Rural Business Group, editor of the group’s newsletter, as well as being a fellow in the Institute and a member of both the Chartered Institute of Taxation and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. He is a regular speaker on local radio and TV on rural and farming issues.
• Diss:

Ian joined Larking Gowen in 1990 and trained with the firm, qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1994 and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Throughout his career Ian has been based at the Diss office and progressed through the ranks to become a partner in 2005.
Ian has always had an interest in the agricultural sector and continues to specialise in advising farmers and related industries. He also advises a wide range of local businesses on all accounts and taxation matters as well as overseeing the firms’ payroll bureau. Ian has extensive experience of capital tax planning, probate and estate administration.

Chris joined Larking Gowen in 1981 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1984. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. • Ipswich (Falcon St)
Having trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Ipswich, Roger gained significant experience as a manager of a local firm of chartered accountants before establishing with others a new practice in the town in 1984. Roger is a member of the Association of Chartered Accountants.
The practice, Manning & Girling, expanded rapidly and in May 2006 following the sudden death of his partner, Roger merged the practice with and became a partner in, Larking Gowen. His portfolio includes a wide range of owner managed businesses, professional practices, charities and private individuals. He provides a supportive and proactive role with his clients covering all the varied financial aspects from compliance to tax planning and development.
David is a partner in the Ipswich office specialising in owner managed businesses and personal tax. Responsible for a wide range of general practice clients, David has recently relocated to Suffolk and is looking forward to establishing close links within the area. He joined Larking Gowen at the Fakenham office in 1990, and was admitted to the partnership in 2001.
He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. He is a past Chairman of the East Anglia Branch of the CIOT and takes a keen interest in all aspects of tax.
• Ipswich (Claydon)
Born in London and educated at Drayton Manor Grammar School, Brian moved to Norwich in 1980 joining Larking Gowen in the same year. Brian is both a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
After 10 years working from the Norwich office, he joined the partnership and relocated to Diss to oversee the development of a vibrant corporate services and business advisory portfolio extending throughout East Anglia. As the firm develops its operations in Suffolk and Essex.
Brian has now moved south to head up the Corporate Services department in Ipswich and Colchester.
• Norwich
Mark joined the firm in 1982, qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1985 and joined the partnership in 1993. He is a member of the Association of Chartered Accountants.
Mark is based at the Norwich Office and looks after a range of owner-managed businesses, with a focus on strategic advice, all aspects of taxation planning, and consideration of succession issues and exit routes. Mark therefore concentrates on forming a close working relationship with his clients.
Mark is one of the firm’s agricultural specialists and is also a member of the team that deals with schools.
Mark qualified as a Certified Accountant with Larking Gowen in 1999, being admitted in the same year and is now a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Mark was admitted to the Partnership in 2006.
Mark has spent most of his professional career advising owner-managed businesses with a particular focus on businesses involved in the construction industry. He heads up the firm’s specialist team for the construction industry sector.
Across his portfolio of clients, Mark deals with all aspects of professional advice, including business consultancy.
After completing his articles with the firm Jonathan qualified in 1975. He then moved to London and joined Tansley Witt (which later become Arthur Anderson). While in London he was seconded to the Price Commission and had a spell working in South Africa.
In 1982 Jonathan returned to Norfolk and Larking Gowen to take over the Holt and Fakenham offices, where he remained until 1999. At this point he moved to the Norwich office where he has continued to concentrate on owner managed businesses, particularly in the farming sector, and on trusts and capital taxation. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and is also one of the firm’s schools specialists.
Ian joined Larking Gowen in 1986, qualified in 1989 and is both a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accounts and an associate member of the Institute of Taxation. He was appointed a partner in the Norwich office in 1998, and has helped to develop the firm’s corporate finance specialisation.
Ian manages a diverse client portfolio, placing particular emphasis on helping businesses to develop and grow, having led numerous business acquisition and disposal assignments over many years. He also has considerable experience in helping clients with tax planning matters, management buy-outs and re-organisations. A lively public speaker, Ian is a regular speaker at the department’s seminars.
Julie trained at LG, qualifying in 1989, became a Fellow of the ICAEW in 2001 and was admitted to the partnership in 2006.
Julie deals with the audit, taxation & financial reporting matters on behalf of some of the firm’s significant corporate clients. In addition, Julie also deals with audit & reporting matters on behalf of a number of the firm’s charity clients & is a member of the ICAEW Charity & Voluntary Sector Group.
Julie is a member of the firm’s in house professional practices committee with responsibility for highlighting & promoting professional best practice & efficiency across the firm.
David joined Larking Gowen in 1977 having been educated at City of Norwich School and Christ’s College, Cambridge. Having qualified in 1977 he became a partner in 1987 and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Throughout his professional career David has advised owner managed and family businesses, with a strong emphasis on capital taxation and succession planning.
David is one of Larking Gowen’s specialist medical partners and has considerable experience in all matters relating to GP practices, private medical consultants and medical groups.
David is also involved in the firm’s charity specialism, and serves as a trustee of a number of local charities.
Anne joined Larking Gowen in 1978, having qualified as a Chartered Accountant with another firm of local accountants.
After becoming a partner in 1990, she has since then been in charge of our Personal Tax and Trust Department in Norwich. Anne is also a member of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners. She has considerable experience in dealing with personal tax and trust matters including overall tax planning, whilst not losing sight of family circumstances and needs.
Anne speaks frequently on BBC Radio Norfolk, including commentary on the Budget, contributes articles to local magazines and does talks for local organisations.
Bob Rose was educated locally, completing his studies at the City of Norwich Grammar School before joining the firm in 1969.
Having passed his examinations at the first attempt, he was appointed to manage the firm’s Corporate and Audit Department, primarily dealing with the East Anglian clients of the firm’s then associated firm, Deloitte Haskins & Sells (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) before joining the partnership in 1983.
He quickly established a reputation for assisting new and growing businesses – still, very much, a passion that he has today – and developed an extensive portfolio of, primarily, sizeable corporate businesses and professional partnerships.
In 1988 he became an Insolvency Practitioner and founded the firm’s Business Recovery Department.
Having been appointed as the firm’s first ever Managing Partner – a position he has now had for over 10 years – Bob’s focus has inevitably changed and he is now very much involved in overseeing the firm’s continued development and expansion, which has seen it extend its boundaries into Suffolk and North Essex in the course of the last five years.
Throughout his career, Bob has taken an active interest in the city of Norwich and is a former Treasurer and Chairman of the Norwich Society and is currently a Director of The Norwich Preservation Trust Limited.
Steve started his career with Larking Gowen in 1991 on a years work placement, joining full-time in 1993, qualified as a chartered accountant in 1996 and became a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Having trained in Norwich, he was promoted to manager and moved to the Firm’s Fakenham office in 1999. Returning to Norwich in 2001, Steve was admitted to the partnership in 2007 where he joined the Dereham office.
Steve has had a broad experience, dealing with owner-managed businesses, offering business advice and dealing with a broad range of compliance matters, including audit and taxation.
David joined the firm in 1978 and qualified in 1982. Following a spell with KPMG in London and Hong Kong, he returned to Larking Gowen in 1987 and became a partner in 1988. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and has recently been awarded the Corporate Finance Advanced Diploma.
David concentrates his efforts in promoting the firm’s corporate finance specialisation, where he has considerable experience in mergers, acquisitions, disposals and corporate restructuring. In addition David has experience of business turnarounds. David also specialises in management buy-outs and the preparation of business plans for banks and others, and is involved in larger corporate work at the firm.
Jonathan Woolston is a Partner in Larking Gowen based in their Norwich office.
He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Larking Gowen in 1984 and was admitted to the Partnership in 1993.
Jon has spent most of his professional career advising owner-managed businesses and has managed a number of large corporate audits. Since 1988 he has developed a specialism in advising professional practices.
Jon has carried out expert witness work for the past eleven years and is a founding member of the Expert Witness Institute.
He has lectured extensively on a wide range of subjects. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales Special Interest Group for Solicitors.
