Restart grants - eligibility to claim
Monday, 24 May 2021
Following the relaxation of the COVID-19 regulations, there has been a new grant introduced to help non-essential retail, hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym and sport businesses to reopen to their customers.
The grant is called the ‘Restart Grant’ and businesses are eligible for the grant if they meet the following criteria:
- rate-paying
- mainly deliver in-person services to the general public in the non-essential retail, hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care or gym and sport sectors
- trading on 1 April 2021
The amount receivable depends on what industry you are in, for non-essential retail the Restart Grant will be a one-off grant under the following thresholds:
Rateable value |
One-off payment |
£15,000 or under |
£2,667 |
£15,001 - £50,999 |
£4,000 |
£51,000 or over |
£6,000 |
For the purposes of this scheme the Government defines non-essential retail businesses as 'a business that is used mainly or wholly for the purposes of retail sale or hire of goods or services by the public, where the primary purpose of products or services provided are not necessary to the health and wellbeing of the public'.
The Restart Grant will support hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym and sport businesses with one-off grants under the following thresholds:
Rateable value |
One-off payment |
£15,000 or under |
£8,000 |
£15,001 - £50,999 |
£12,000 |
£51,000 or over |
£18,000 |
If a business operates services that could be considered non-essential and also fall into another category, such as hospitality, the level strand that they are eligible for will be determined by assessing which category constitutes 50% or more of their overall business.
How to Apply
If you have already registered for grants you should automatically be contacted. The grants have been available from 1 April 2021 and applications must be received by 30 June 2021. Applications need to be made via your local authority’s website (local authority details can be found via the link below):
https://www.gov.uk/find-local-council
We have also seen instances where incorrect amounts have been paid out. If you have already received a grant, it would be worthwhile checking the amount received is the amount that you were eligible for. If the amount received is incorrect, you should contact your local authority to resolve the matter.
