Get to know our team better! Every few months we will bring you a snapshot of one of our team members. This month we feature Corporate Finance Partner, James Lay. James has been with MHA Larking Gowen for nearly 20 years – one of many long-standing figures within the firm.
What do you enjoy the most about your role at MHA Larking Gowen?
I get a great deal of satisfaction from helping clients achieve their personal objectives. We often help them with life-changing events, such as the sale of their family business, and this in turn enables them to focus on other things such as retirement or other business interests. If the client is happy then so am I!
What do you view as your cornerstone transaction in your career?
I started my corporate finance career back in 2004, and during this time I have worked on a huge variety of deals, from small sole trader businesses through to large corporate deals. No two deals are ever the same, and the smaller deals are often just as exciting and involved as the larger deals. Although no individual deal is more important than any other, the sale of the gas business of CPS Fuels to Calor in 2004 gave me invaluable experience at such an early stage of my career.
As a child what did you want to be when you grew up?
A corporate finance advisor!
If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, who would they be and why?
Easy, my family!
What advice would you give to anyone considering corporate finance as a career?
There’s no substitute for hard work, you get out what you put in. It’s a challenging career, but very rewarding and worth the effort.
