Mandatory e-invoicing is coming – is your organisation ready?
The Government has confirmed plans to introduce mandatory electronic invoicing for VAT invoices from April 2029. Although implementation remains several years away, organisations should be aware of the potential impact on finance systems and invoicing processes.
What is e-invoicing?
Many businesses already issue invoices electronically by email. However, e-invoicing is different.
Under an e-invoicing model, invoices are exchanged in a structured digital format that allows accounting systems to process information automatically without manual data entry.
Why is the Government introducing it?
The Government believes greater use of e-invoicing can:
- improve business efficiency;
- reduce administrative costs;
- reduce invoicing errors;
- improve payment processes; and
- support tax compliance.
Other countries have already introduced similar systems.
Do businesses need to act now?
Not immediately.
The detailed rules and technical standards have not yet been finalised. However, businesses making significant investments in finance systems over the next few years should consider future e-invoicing compatibility as part of their decision-making process.
Who may be most affected?
The greatest impact is likely to be on organisations that:
- generate invoices manually;
- rely heavily on spreadsheets;
- use older accounting software;
- have complex finance operations; or
- process large volumes of transactions.
Businesses already using modern cloud accounting solutions may find the transition significantly easier. This will depend on the final requirements and software developments over the coming years.
How can we help?
We can assist with:
- accounting software reviews;
- finance process reviews;
- digital transformation projects;
- internal controls and systems advice; and
- preparing for future compliance requirements.
2029 may sound a long way off, but organisations making decisions about finance systems today should ensure future compatibility with e-invoicing requirements. It is easier and cheaper to build this into planned system upgrades than to retrofit compliance later.
