What happens if my company can’t pay its VAT or tax bill?
If your company cannot pay its VAT or tax bill, it does not automatically mean the business has failed. Many businesses experience temporary cashflow pressure, particularly during periods of rising costs or slower trading. The important thing is to act early, understand your options, and seek advice before the situation becomes more serious.
For many directors, receiving pressure from HMRC can feel overwhelming. It is also common for business owners to delay seeking support because they are worried about the consequences or concerned about what it may mean for the future of the business.
In reality, there are often more options available than people expect.
The first step is understanding whether the issue is temporary or part of a wider financial challenge. In some cases, businesses simply need more time to pay. HMRC may agree to a Time to Pay arrangement, allowing tax liabilities to be paid in instalments over an agreed period.
However, if cashflow pressures are continuing, it is important not to ignore the situation. Missed tax payments can sometimes be an early warning sign that a business needs additional support or restructuring.
Seeking advice early can make a significant difference.
A business recovery adviser can help directors understand:
- whether the business remains viable
- what practical options are available
- how to manage creditor pressure
- and what steps can be taken to protect the business moving forward
Importantly, asking for advice does not mean you are committing to insolvency proceedings. Often, conversations are simply about creating breathing space, improving visibility over cashflow, and helping directors make informed decisions with confidence.
At Larking Gowen, we understand these situations can be stressful and deeply personal for business owners. No two businesses are the same, and our role is to provide clear, practical advice without judgement.
Many directors we speak to are relieved to discover that financial difficulties are not always as unmanageable as they first feared. With the right support, businesses can often stabilise, restructure, or plan the next steps in a controlled and professional way.
If you are worried about unpaid VAT, corporation tax, or increasing pressure from HMRC, it is important to remember that you are not alone and that support is available.
