Tax Returns & Private Client Tax

At Larking Gowen, we understand that our personal tax clients are individuals with different circumstances and requirements. Our team of private client specialists are highly knowledgeable and experienced, and we'll take the initiative to make sure you get the most from your wealth, covering all areas of private client taxation.

Tax legislation, both UK and global, is constantly changing. It's easier than ever to pay the wrong amount of tax, so it's important you choose a tax advisor who can protect you from the consequences of non-compliance as well as maximising your wealth.

Our clients include individuals trustees, and executors, including British citizens who live abroad and foreign nationals living in the UK.

Although we file over 8,500 tax returns every year, each one of our clients is treated as an individual.

We use dedicated software to file online returns that covers all aspects of income, gains and claims for reliefs due.

Our service isn't just about covering HMRC requirements and compliance. We take the initiative and make sure you're fully aware of any tax planning opportunities that will let you make the most of your money.

The way we are required to deliver information to HMRC is changing and is explained further in the HMRC campaign Making Tax Digital. For more information please see our dedicated Making Tax Digital page.

Inheritance tax

This is a complex area that can have a significant impact on you and your family's wealth. Our years of experience will help you plan effectively to minimise liabilities.

Capital gains tax

Rates can be as low as 10% for basic rate taxpayers, and on certain business assets that qualify for business asset disposal relief. Talk to us about how you can reduce or defer your capital gains tax bill.

Residence and domicile tax law is a complex and fast-changing area that can bring unfavourable outcomes. This can be avoided with proper planning.

Our tax advisors act for hundreds of UK nationals who live overseas, and a large number of foreign nationals who live in the UK.

UK tax legislation can impact on the affairs of landlords who are UK resident and non-UK resident.  Our team can advise on the UK tax reporting obligations and provide tax advice.  This can include submitting annual tax returns, non-resident capital gains tax returns and Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED) reporting.

We have a wealth of experience in dealing with HMRC enquiries and are skilled at negotiating settlements. We offer a Tax Fee Protection Service which covers the cost of us defending you against an HMRC enquiry, giving you peace of mind. More details of this service can be found here.

We'll work closely with your financial advisor or financial planner to help you maximise your family wealth.

When a marriage or civil partnership breaks down, the last thing on your mind is your tax position. But the tax implications of separation can increase financial strain and make your economic circumstances worse.

To prevent this happening, it's worthwhile seeking tax and financial advice early on. We'll work closely and sympathetically with you and in cooperation with your legal advisor to reach the best possible outcome.

We'll also help with any financial implications where there's a family business involved.

Trusts allow you to set aside assets for future beneficiaries in a tax-efficient way while still keeping a level of control. For example, they can be used to soften the effects of inheritance tax and capital gains tax.

We have a dedicated team of trust specialists to guide you through this complex area, advising trustees of both onshore and offshore trusts on compliance and tax planning opportunities.

Services can include attending trustees’ meetings, preparing accounts, annual tax returns and inheritance tax forms.

Probate services

We can also assist executors with a range of services including the preparation of estate accounts and filing annual tax returns in respect of estates. For more information on our probate services please click here.

60-day Capital Gains Tax return

Whilst the housing market is currently experiencing a bit of turmoil, house prices on the whole have significantly increased in recent years, meaning the value of your property is likely to have risen since purchase. This increase in value on disposal is known as a capital gain.
