International Women’s Day - Becky Ames - Stand Tall and Be Bold
Wednesday, 04 March 2020
MHA Larking Gowen Partner, Becky Ames, leads the Business and Private team based in Suffolk, advising owner-managed businesses on all aspects of accounting and tax, and developing her team to help them achieve their ambitions.
Becky joined MHA Larking Gowen as a trainee in 1997, having gained a degree in law, and has remained with the firm ever since, working in various offices and with a broad range of teams.
“I’ve been encouraged to progress regardless of my gender and working hours. For ten years of my career I was part time, one of those years as a partner. However, common to many businesses, we recognise we have a gender imbalance at senior level,” says Becky.
To address this, the firm has circulated a survey to first identify and then overcome barriers to career progression.
“We need to unpick traditional views on gender, such as being aware of negative language – a confident woman may be termed ‘bossy’, while her male equivalent is often viewed more positively. We also need to tackle confidence issues for female staff, and broaden the type of skills we value,” adds Becky. “The survey, and the work we will do as a result of it, aims to open up this conversation.”
Becky’s advice to women is to stand tall and be clear on what they want to achieve, at any stage of their career. “Today’s business culture is far more focused on employee needs. The opportunities are there – take every one,” Becky says.
